Blaze the trails at Rueter-Hess; join National Trails Day Saturday, June 3

In Colorado, recreational opportunities are a top priority. Whether it’s making sure the kids learn to swim, finding the perfect fitness class, or exploring a new trail, the Town has something for everyone. Soon, these recreational programs could extend beyond Castle Rock borders. Be among the first to see the future possibilities and blaze the trails at Rueter-Hess Reservoir to celebrate National Trails Day.

While the primary propose of the reservoir is to store water, the site could be even more when recreational opportunities are introduced. Get a sneak peek at the new amenities at National Trails Day Saturday, June 3.

Guided hikes will be taking place every 30 minutes from 9 to 11 a.m. The hikes will be between 2 and 3 miles round trip. However, there will be one family-friendly shorter hike available at 10 a.m. Please keep in mind these are not delineated trails, so bikes and strollers will not be allowed. Also, dogs will not be allowed at the reservoir for this event.

Register for a preferred hike time at CRgov.com/TrailsDay, and get an access pass to drive right into the reservoir the day of the event. There is a fee of $5 per vehicle. Day-of registrants will need to wait in a separate line for entry and parking at the reservoir is limited. Preregistration is recommended.

The American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is a nationally recognized trail awareness program that takes place annually on the first Saturday in June. The program is intended to inspire the public to discover, learn about and celebrate trails.

Rueter-Hess Reservoir is located on Hess Road about 1 mile east of Interstate-25 and the Castle Pines Parkway exit. The Town is teaming up with the Rueter-Hess Recreation Authority – which includes the City of Lone Tree, City of Castle Pines, Town of Castle Rock, Town of Parker, Parker Water and Sanitation District and Douglas County – to determine potential outdoor activities for the reservoir.

To start, the reservoir will only be opened for limited recreational programming and special events. Further improvements could open the opportunity for residents to participate in activities like, hiking, biking and non-motorized boating. However, the entire plan will take up to six years to complete. For now, registering for events like National Trails Day will be the only way to enjoy the reservoir recreationally.

More information about the recreational master plan developed for the reservoir is available at CRgov.com/RueterHessRec.
