Town of Castle Rock Supports the Second Amendment

2nd Amendment

At the Town Council meeting on March 5th, Mayor Paul Donahue asked attorney Bob Slenz to draft a formal message to state legislators who were preparing to voteon gun control measures. "I recommend our lawyer create a resolution that town council could get behind in support of the Constitution and the support of our Second Amendment rights." Donahue said.

The Mayor received unanimous support from fellow councilmembers to take an official position opposing the proposed gun control initiatives. Recent incidents in Castle Rock including a burglary in Plum Creek where shots were fired and the chase with shots fired while officers attempted to execute an arrest warrant near Taco Bell, were cited as examples of why we should not mess with the Second Amendment. "We can see we're not isolated from crime down here." Donahue said.

"When we were elected to office, we took an oath to uphold the Constitution and the freedoms it gave to the residents of this country, this state and our Town,” said Mayor Paul Donahue. “This proposed resolution is less about firearms and more about upholding our oath to our constituents. As a Council, we felt it was important at this time to publicly affirm our intent to stand up for our residents’ rights.”

Formally weighing in on proposed statewide gun control legislation, Town Council will consider a resolution Tuesday in defense of the Second Amendment.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St., and there is always opportunity for public comment. Meetings are also broadcast live online, CRgov.com/council.
