Castle Rock Aims to Quiet Train Whistles

newcastle union pacific large

On March 5, 2013, Castle Rock Town Council was again considering a quiet zone option for the railroad crossings. The use of a train whistle is written into federal law, which was ammended in 1996 to allow for quiet zones if the applicant can show the crossing will be equally safe, whether the whistle is sounded or not. The crossing improvements that would meet this requirement exceeded $752,000 in 2009 when the option was first explored. The Union Pacific Railroad provides construction estimates and also performs all construction fo the quiet zones. Town Council heard from many residents who urged them to install a quiet zone. People reported disruptions at night caused by the train whistles in The Meadows, Red Hawk, Woodlands and Plum Creek neighborhoods. Town Council needs to get an updated bid for the crossing improvements and hopes to have the quiet zone in place by 2014.
